Professor of Assessment, Management and Health Services Policy – Department of Health Systems and Policy

Nikos Maniadakis studied Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Athens, and obtained, with fellowships from the State Scholarship Foundation and the British Council, a Master’s Degree in Economics from York University and a Doctorate in Business Administration at  Warwick Business School, England. In addition, he has specialized in European Political and Social Security at Roskilde University’s Department of Economics and Social Sciences in Denmark and has attended postgraduate seminars in financial analysis, innovation, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence at Harvard, Oxford, INSEAD and Stanford.

He worked at the beginning of his career as a researcher at the Health Economics Research Center at Oxford University and was a visiting professor at the Health Services Research Center at Warwick University in England. He then served as a Director at London-based European headquarters of the multinational firms Pharmacia-Pfizer and Eli Lilly’s, in business development and new product launch. Upon his return to Greece, he served as Governor and President of the University Hospital of Patras and the University Hospital of Heraklion. In 2009 he was elected Professor and Director of the Department of Health Services Administration of the National School of Public Health, where he was an Associate Dean and Director of the Postgraduate Program in Health Services Administration.

His research focuses on the quantitative analysis and evaluation of health services and technologies and on strategic health and policy planning. He is a associate editor  of the international scientific journal Applied Health Economics and Policy and a member of the publishing teams of Pharmacoeconomics and BMC Cardiovascular Disorders. He is a referee in a number of international scientific journals and has published a total of three hundred articles in prestigious scientific journals to which 6,000 references have been made.

He has been Greece’s national representative to the European Commission in terms of measuring efficiency, productivity and quality of service. He is a member of various scientific organizations in Greece and abroad and has delivered over five hundred lectures at scientific events in Greece and abroad. It has received invitations to participate in events from governments or bodies of countries such as China, Russia, South Korea, Argentina, Egypt and the UAE. He has also taught as a visiting professor at the universities of Warwick, Oxford, Bocconi, Maastricht, Patras, Athens, Piraeus and Crete, in subjects related to the administration and organization and economics of health services and businesses.

He has worked as a consultant in administration, organization, business development, and market research with dozens of multinational companies in Greece but mainly internationally and has implemented projects in countries such as France, England, Germany, China, Russia and Australia. He has also worked in Greece with important public bodies and Ministries. From 2011 to 2015, he was a member of the Committee of Experts on Health Reform, a Minister of Health Advisor and a Coordinator of the Memorandum on Health, in the context of which he designed and supervised many important National projects.
